Spelling Mastery Resources

Spelling Mastery is a six level spelling program that has been implemented at Paraburdoo PS for Years 1 to 7. The program has proven to be effective for all students whether they are advanced, average, academically challenged learners or learning English for the first time. Spelling Mastery encrouages students to think their way through spelling, rather than memorising words through weekly spelling lists. Spelling Mastery focuses on; Phonemic awareness which teaches students predictable spellings for different sounds, Whole-word which helps students to memorise the spelling of high-use, irregularly spelled words and Morphemic awareness which teaches more advanced spellers how to use spelling rules, base words, suffixes and prefixes to spell many thousands of words.

At Paraburdoo PS, students are given the Spelling Mastery placement test to determine their appropriate level. Students are then streamed into different classrooms for the spelling period which is from 12:05 to 12:30 each day.

Spelling Mastery Study Lists

These study lists provide parents and students with words that have been covered each week in Spelling Mastery. The study lists also provide definitions for words and morphographs.

Spelling Mastery Additional Homework

The additional homework is set out similar to NAPLAN spelling tests and is organised on a week-by-week basis. Parents may want to access this homework if they think their child needs additional work with their weekly Spelling Mastery homework.

Spelling Mastery Homework

Homework will be posted every Monday and is an important aspect of the Spelling Mastery program. Homework provides students with an opportunity to revise words that have been used during the week in spelling lessons. There is an emphasis on editing and identifying errors in the spelling homework which is an important skill for students to have when revising their own writing.
